Fashion Tips – How To Wear Velvet

This season, style is all about rich textures, so it’s no wonder that stars can’t get enough of velvet. It’s the return of the smooth, soft and most touchable of textiles. Velvet staked it’s territorial claim on real royalty to rock n’ roll kings and queens like David Bowie and Stevie Nicks. This plush fabric delivers a dose of glam and can add instant luxury to an outfit, but keeping it modern takes some savvy. Here are my fashion tips on how to wear velvet.

Fashion Tips – How to Wear Velvet

Velvet fashion tips

– Crushed or crinkled velvet can easily look cheap so be wary of your choices.

-Stick to smooth pieces in rich hues and jewel tones for sophisticated appeal.

-Velvet in lighter shades is tricky; so if you’re uncertain stick to richer jewel tones. And remember crushed, crinkled and crimped velvet can easily be seen as shabby and cheap NOT shabby and chic.

-You can channel some grandeur and wear a chic tailored suit with a silk blouse or step up the opulence quotient and wear a velvet coat. I believe the best way to wear velvet is in an unexpected way like a velvet blazer with a rock n’ roll t-shirt and a pleated midi skirt or a striped pencil skirt with velvet platform heels.

-While you may be tempted by it’s soft appeal, don’t over do it. It may be making a revival, but you want the look to be rich, not cheap. Avoid touchy-feely overload and choose one good piece to your outfit. A velvet dress or suit and you’re done.  If it’s the velvet accessories you’re after then two is more than enough to complete your look.

-As for keeping your velvet clean, don’t blot a spill or you may flatten or ruin the texture. Instead, shake out the moisture, let it air-dry, then fluff with your finger.
