Top Trends In Interior Design for 2019

January 8, 2019 Written by Alison Deyette

I adore giving a room a refresh in design so I’m excited to share the top trends in interior design for 2019. The results show I’m one of the majorities of people in the country who have mod style in their home with mid-century pieces of furniture, natural wood tones and pops of color. The second most popular is rustic style with warm hues, layered textures and cozy spaces. The third design trend was industrial style gaining popularity in smaller up-an-coming cities with millenials and loft style living. Ultimately, the design trends were all about three c’s: color, curves and comfort.

Which states are big on these trends? I was surprised to learn New Mexico prefers mod, Mississippi loves rustic and South Dakota is an industrial style mecca. The west coast and northeast go for mod, the Midwest and southern regions choose rustic and then a few states like South Dakota, Wyoming and Oregon are trending towards industrial choices like brick walls, mixed metals and masculine structures.

The most popular purchases for interior decor was spent on pillows, rugs and artwork which is one of the easiest ways to show off your personality and make your home fell like home.

Color Trends

There’s a difference between the colors that people like and the colors that they actually want to live with in their homes. The colors that Pantone choose as the colors of the year don’t necessarily translate to a decor favorite. Blues and neutrals are the favorite colors. The least chosen color choice? Pastels and greens. Perhaps people prefer a blush pink dress and their greenery in a house plant instead of furniture.

Whimsy With Classics

A bold decor trend taking over walls in 2019 will be classical paintings presented in a whimsical style creating a modern spin on a once very serious theme. It will be all abou the drama with a modern and playful reinterpretation of Dutch masterworks.

If you have a dull corner in need of some whimsy, try introducing one of these artworks to bring an element of light and playful drama to your space. Shop for classic art with whimsy on Modsy.

All About The Curves

Hard lines are being traded in for softer curves. We’re already seeing curved furniture, such as sofas, armchairs, even beds, and believe this is a trend that will be everywhere in 2019.

Painterly Strokes

Current obsession? Bold, striking, hand-painted brushstrokes. One of the favorite decor trends on the horizon, Modsy is eyeing prints and textiles with an abstract and hand-painted flair.

You don’t have to commit to a big-ticket item, like a sofa or rug, to try the look. Try a few pillows to bring a bold pop of pattern to your sofa or bed. Or consider acquiring a piece of art with large, intentional brushstrokes to easily elevate any gallery wall.

Embrace Nature

Neutrals

The natural textures and plants that were big in 2018 are here to stay and 2019 is all about layering them. Bring some zen into your home, no matter your style with a few key pieces. To add natural textures into your space, think jute rugs, storage baskets, rattan chairs, and woven wall-hangings. Not sure how to style your plants? Here are 5 ways to decorate with plants.

High Contrast Neutrals

Bold-Neutrals

While neutral color palettes have been all the rage, we’re going to see more and more dramatic neutral palettes. Think dark neutrals paired with lighters colors to create high contrast spaces. Love the look?

Beyond the big ticket items like a couch, the most popular more affordable items that people purchased to make design changes in their home included pillows to poufs. It seems that poufs are the new ottoman. They’re more casual, versatile and don’t have to match your furniture, plus they’re easier to move around or hide.

And plants, whether real or faux are a great way to liven up dead space, as in that corner where nothing else seems to fit. And why stop at just one when you can create visual texture by adding different greenery in varying heights to give that spot new life and depth. While you’re at it, try the cluster approach by putting a few smaller pots together on a floating shelf or as a coffee table centerpiece.
